Tend the Earth

This beautiful earth sustains us, and whether or not we recognize the mysteries of all living and non-living things, God is indeed present in them.

The act of producing food is one of the best ways to reflect on the secrets of creation. We too often forget that creation is a constant activity of God rather than a single moment when God formed the world, wound it up and set it in motion.

When we grow, raise, tend or catch food we are direct participants in this activity and we benefit spiritually when we recognize our own role in it.

This year's Fast for Change materials focus on food production and call us into deeper relationship with God, the earth, and our communities.

The new prayer and reflection booklet, 7 Days to Tend the Earth, has a piece of original art, a prayer, a fact, and a suggestion for a small change for each day.  Order booklets for yourself a small group at no cost to you.

Why Fast?

Our belief is that hunger in a world of such abundance is a matter of injustice. More than a billion people are chronically malnourished. The coexistence of abundance and abject poverty imply some changes are necessary to our daily life. As followers of Jesus, we are being called to respond in prayer and action.  To "fast" really means to hold firm to an observance - whatever it may be - which involves voluntarily giving up food, or whatever else is standing in the way of a Divine calling...

How Can I Participate?

STAND UP and be counted among the people across Canada who are getting involved - Register your participation, and order free materials to create your own event!

PRAY and REFLECT by fasting from food however you can, in ways that fit with your personal health. Use the materials for worship and reflection found on this website.  You can also fast from other things or practices that are connected to injustice.

GATHER  with one or more people around a table that’s been set for supper, without the food. Instead of eating, share your reflections around the day of fasting.  Share also your ideas for action.

SHARE your experiences with us. Take a picture or send us an email and tell us about your Fast, and a small change you think you can make.

ACT in solidarity with those who hungry. The small things we do in our daily lives to benefit those around us and around the world are sacred acts that enrich our own lives as well.  Look into possible next steps for your community of faith to act on to promote food justice.

EFICOR works with the mahadalits in the northern Indian state of Bihar. Mahadalits are considered the lowest caste of people and are not deemed worthy of acknowledgement in the Hindu system. EFICOR works with them to improve their access to different government programs, which improve their quality of life. One program is to ensure that children who are in school receive one meal a day. EFICOR works with the community members to support them as they lobby and struggle with governmental representatives to ensure they are receiving all the support they are entitled to.
